Well I vanished off the face of blogland to get the Cabinet of Curiosities Show - indoor gallery show at the Museum of Outdoor Arts ( www.moaonline.org ) and Hudson Holiday - Holiday Light Display created by MOA presented at Hudson Gardens ( www.hudsonholiday.com ) show up and they are! And I am still standing!

Some Artists Announced!

I think I already mentioned that Jayne Harnett Hargrove is whipping up a treasure trove of textilian curiosities. Today, I saw a snippet of a photo of a work by famed N.B. (can't release his name yet) and it was amazing. Andrew Smith will be joining us with something mechanically aquatic, and Emry Gweldig as well as Charles Dobson have reluctantly agreed to make an appearence. Michelle Brower is working on a contemporary work, and Cory Gilstrap and Scott Soffa are lending thier amazing talents to the show. - Oh - the best news of the day is that Jayne will be working at the Museum for the next 10 days! I am sure she will give me a work out.

Containment

I feel that the "containment" part of the Cabinet of Curiosities show is of up most importance. I am working on the paperwork and forms that will accompany the objects. The trappings around the object: lens, support, documentation, dust cover, seal, frame, traveling case, mount, etc. - Those display devices greatly contribute to making the object special or precious or magical. The travel casework or wrapper is more useful when it creates part of the display (rather than the need to store away the wrappings and trappings). In this instance, We will assume that each curiosity was sent from somewhere, and that we may be a mere respite or stop on the objects long journey. Relics weaken in physical strength over time, and layers of protection are added. Also, relics are often broken in smaller and smaller pieces, to be divided amongst the collectors, keepers & hoarders therefore, the sensationalism of the remaining fragment grows as its stature diminuates. The Vitae of the object, the memory, of course increases as it is shuttled from place to place, owner or keeper to keeper, and the imprint of those touched by it grows like the people sticking to each other in the story of the Golden Swan of Aesop's Fables.

Museum of Outdoor Arts' Cabinet of Curiosities Show

MOA's indoor show this fall is Cabinet of Curiosities.

It is a group show curated by Cynthia Madden Leitner, and involves 6 incredible artists and several contributors (including Jayne HH) plus the Museum team.

My charge in the show is series of cabinets and acquired objects that make up a room for the

Imaginary and Impossible Wunderkammer of Lewis Carroll & his Collection of Fairy Tale Reliquaries

...or something to that effect.

The show will open in early October 2009

On a Saturday, with a Fashion Show!

and will run in to March (without hurting it) 2010

At MOA's indoor gallery at the Englewood Civic Center in Englewood, Colorado, US.
